SACRAMENTO – Today, Assembly Republicans released a video highlighting President Biden’s comments slamming government-run health care schemes like the one being advanced by Assembly Democrats. “Absolutely Preposterous” features Biden’s criticism of single-payer health care’s impacts, including high costs, middle-class tax increases and kicking people off their current health care plans.

“Joe Biden and I don’t agree on much, but we’re on the same page in opposing a government takeover of health care,” said Assembly Republican Leader Marie Waldron (Valley Center). “Biden and other Democrats from across the nation have spoken out against government-run health care, but in California, the self-professed ‘moderate’ Democrats are falling in line with the most extreme fringe of their party. They will have to answer for every job lost, every health plan eliminated, every medical service rationed and every family driven out of state by high costs if this plan becomes law.”

Throughout the 2020 Democratic presidential primary, Biden condemned single-payer health care schemes like AB 1400/ACA 11, saying:

“The idea that you are going to save that person making $60,000 per year on Medicare For All is absolutely preposterous.” (PBS NewsHour/Politico Debate, 12/19/19)

“How many of you liked your employer-based health care? Did you think it was adequate? Now if I come along and say ‘Finished, you can’t have it anymore;’ that’s what Medicare For All does. You cannot have it. Period.”(AARP/Des Moines Register Forum, 7/15/19)

“You will lose your employer-based insurance.” (CNN, 7/31/19)

“There will be a deductible – the deductible will be out of your paycheck.” (CNN, 7/31/19)

“Let’s talk about Medicare For All. Do you think there’s been any truth in advertising on that? It’s gonna raise taxes on middle-class people. Not just wealthy people.” (60 Minutes, 10/27/19)

“It will require middle-class taxes to go up, not down.” (CNN, 7/31/19)

“It’s gonna increase personal taxes.” (PBS NewsHour/Politico Debate, 12/19/19)

AB 1400 is facing a vote in the Assembly Appropriations Committee today and must be voted on by the entire Assembly by January 31 in order for it to be considered in the Senate.
