Letter to attendees of Prima Deshecha Landfill community meeting:
We stand with Orange County constituents in opposition to the proposed doubling of the capacity of the Prima Deschecha Landfill in San Juan Capistrano. We can all agree that it is difficult to expand and site landfills, especially in developed regions, but the details of this plan are troubling. The location is not suitable for significant growth given the proximity of residential neighborhoods, businesses and schools.
While the State Legislature does not hold jurisdiction over this proposal, many of you have shared your concerns with our offices. These concerns include environmental impacts, increased odor, overwhelming mitigation requirements and the maintenance of air quality standards.
There is also the question about a mitigation analysis as it relates to increased traffic along Ortega Highway. Finally, there are already significant quality of life concer,:,s with the current capacity due to deceleration of property values.
We applaud you for making your concerns known, and hope there can be an alternative plan that addresses the needs of nearby residents and businesses. Please feel free to reach out to any of our offices as this proposal continues through the planning process.
Sincerely
